This is very common question to all beginner guitar players. The answer is simply YES. It doesn’t mean that you have to master all music theory in the world, but there are certainly some music theory that you MUST know.
Basic music theory will help you become a better musician and better guitar player. Of course there are exceptions through the history and you can find there great guitar players that didn’t know much about music theory, but that doesn’t mean you should sit back hoping you will succeed in the same way and it’s definitely not recommended.
All good musicians know at least basic music harmony, scales, chords, rhythms, measures, music styles, some music history etc. This is not a luxury, this is a MUST.
Skipping or non-Skipping guitar lessons and music theory will determine how you will advance into excellent or bad musician of guitar player. If you practice wrong, you can waste years and years and still you won’t be able to play anything on your guitar.
So, be smart, don’t skip important guitar lessons and don’t do everything you hear others do, especially don’t seek for a quickest way of learning how to play guitar. Instead of this, you better find the best and quality way of learning hot to play and finally move up.
